Diamond Carat Weight

To put it simply, diamond carat weight measures how much a diamond weighs.

A metric “carat” is defined as 200 milligrams. Each carat is subdivided into 100 ‘points.’ This allows very precise measurements to the hundredth decimal place. A jeweler may describe the weight of a diamond below one carat by its ‘points’ alone. For instance, the jeweler may refer to a diamond that weighs 0.25 carats as a ‘twenty-five pointer.’Diamond weights greater than one carat are expressed in carats and decimals. A 1.08 carat stone would be described as ‘one point oh eight carats.

All else being equal, diamond price increases with diamond carat weight because larger diamonds are rarer and more desirable. However, two diamonds of equal carat weight can have very different values (and prices) depending on three other factors of the diamond 4CsColorClarity, and Cut.

While now you know what carat means, it’s also important to remember that a diamond’s value is determined using all of the 4Cs, and not just carat weight.

How did the carat system start?

In order to understand what a diamond carat measures, it would help to know the origins of the modern carat system. Carat weight started with the carob seed, when early gem traders used the small, uniform seeds as counterweights in their balance scales. Today, the carat is the same milligram weight in every corner of the world.

What are “magic sizes”?

Some weights are considered “magic sizes” – half carat, three-quarter carat, and carat. Visually, there’s little difference between a 0.99 carat diamond and one that weighs a full carat. But the price differences between the two can be significant.

My “soon-to-be-“ sister-in-law, mother-in-law, and niece planned a day for us to explore engagement rings in November 2018. They scheduled an appointment with David Stern Jewelers for us to learn... about and try on rings. What an experience! David is extremely knowledgeable. He asked probing questions about my interests and presented us with rings that both aligned and challenged my initial desires. At the end of the visit, we had absorbed so much information, taken pictures of exciting ring styles, and never felt pressure to purchase. With that, I’ve encouraged my boyfriend to give David a visit!read more

I needed to get an engagement ring made for my fiance, and David came highly recommended. I already had a diamond from an heirloom and needed it transformed into a new ring. From the first visit up... until the end result David made me feel extremely comfortable. Walking in I had a really good idea of what I wanted. Even with that being so, David still offered his creative input without being pushy. I'm really grateful that he did, because the end result is amazing! It turned out better than I imagined. There was a little mishap with the ring size, and David had it fixed in a matter of hours, which we truly appreciated.read more

I brought my wife's engagement ring to David Stern for an appraisal. The customer service was excellent.I made an appointment online and was immediately greeted by David. David Stern himself actually... took the time to appraise my ring. The appraisal was very professional and quick. I immediately received an extremely professional email appraisal form to send to my insurance company and then about one week later received the formal paperwork in the mail. The final formal appraisal was printed on thick photograph paper and is very nice. I highly recommend David Stern if you are looking for any type of jewelry appraisal. He is very knowledgable, friendly and courteous. Thanks again, David!read more
